Leah New is the 2024 winner of the Dan Hemingway Short Story Prize, awarded for her excellent story It's an Intimate Thing to Watch a Bird Die.
Originally from New York, Leah New is a fourth-year student at the University of St Andrews, completing her undergraduate degree in English Literature. Her short story, It's an Intimate Thing to Watch a Bird Die, explores how memories of grief cumulate, assembling sequences of loss.
Centred around three vignettes of witnessing birds perish, her story delineates how grief, a bird of prey, descends upon an individual, ushering them into spirals of darkness. Leah hopes to continue writing poetry and prose professionally after graduation, and is working to expand her writing to the larger, novel format.
The 2024 judges were Professor David Herd and Sue Hemingway.
