PRIZES IN MEMORY OF DAN HEMINGWAY

The Dan Hemingway prizes were established by his family in 1992 to encourage creative potential in the arts. Two prizes are awarded each year – one at the Cherwell School Oxford, one at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.

Dan Hemingway, born 2 June 1972, was a student at the Cherwell School and after a gap year went to St Andrews to read economics and philosophy. But at the age of 19, shortly after midnight on Christmas Eve 1991, he was tragically killed by a motorist. 

He had wide-ranging talents and interests from Dylan to Beethoven, Wodehouse to Shakespeare. His greatest love was literature and he first started to write short stories and novels at the age of 16. Whether his final output would have fulfilled his early potential we will never know. The prizes were established as one small encouragement to other young people who have the potential and ambition to make a lasting contribution.
