Grace Campbell
Originally from Edinburgh, Grace Campbell graduated in 2018 at the University of St Andrews with a first in English. Her finals dissertation was on the novelist Jean Rhys.
She won the 2017 Dan Hemingway Short Story Prize for 'September', a sensitive and empathetic story about a wife and mother coming to terms in a very pragmatic way with a potentially terminal illness. In explaining the inspiration for the story, Grace commented: "It's difficult to pinpoint the exact origins of my story 'September', but it reflects my interest in representing everyday life, particularly family relationships, mortality and motherhood." In addition to fiction, Grace also writes poetry. The Dan Hemingway is the first prize she has received for her prose work.
After graduation in 2018, Grace intends to spend a year working and travelling before hopefully undertaking postgraduate study in English Literature or Creative Writing.
The 2017 judges were John Burnside, Oli Hazzard, Emma Jones and Sue Hemingway.
