Blake continues his exploration of wrestlers, a major theme throughout his career. Blake has been a wrestling fan since childhood.

'I loved it immediately. I loved the theatre, the fantasy and the idea of good versus evil. I was once asked what I would do if I hadn't been a painter, and after deep thought I decided I would have been a professional wrestler. My wrestlers are fictitious portraits, fictitious wrestlers. They all have different names.’

He began his first series of wrestlers in 1961 using publicity shots from sports magazines and giving each an invented heroic personal history. 

This series of prints are taken from new works created for Blake's London exhibition 'Portraits and People' in Autumn 2015.
